- Have you considered the cost of a) building a new factory.
- b) refurbishing an old factory.
- There are opotunity costs either way. It is just not possible to create
- a factory to produce computers for nothing. I think that unless there
- was a very high demand for the computers AT would probably lose money
- in the long run opening up a new factory.
-
- I think it would be much cheaper to just increase production if the need

-
- : the role of a limited production stop gap machine until the PPC Amiga'

- : but no business plan should be so set in stone that it can't be ammended
- : when new situations present themselfs. The potential of the 1200 in
- : NA as a web access machine was not necessarily appearant even a few
- : months ago. Things have moved much more rapidly than people thought they
- : would. The key factor is that congress actualy came up with a pretty
- : robust telecomunications deregulation plan that the white house signed
- : on to. This means really cheap net access in 1996 instead of 1997, or
- : 1998. That means that the verious Web access machines that everyone has
- : planned are out of sync with the market. The market will be here a year
- : to 18 months before the competition is. Now the closest competition to
- : an A1200 net bundle is an IBM multimedia bundle with a few extras. I see
- : that the mass marketers in the NYC area are selling these bundles at from
- : $850-$950 for and they all need a few things to make them into web access
- : machine (those things can be different depending on the retailer or bundle.
- : some bundles say monitor not included, some don't have modems, some come
- : with only 4megs of ram, ect.). So the real price of a web access IBM system
- : will realy come in at about $1,100 - $1,200 street price. That means that
- : in order to be competative, the lesser known Amiga, would have to come in
- : with a street price of around $850.00 to be competative, and that is for
- : everything. It's possible to ship them here from France and sell them for
- : under $850.00, but just. What is clearly needed is a low cost manufacturer
- : preferably in or near the US. This means less control by AT from the home
-
- Again have you thought about the opportunity costs for doing this.
-
- : office (though in the age of CU CME, one wonders just how much less control.
- : the Philidelphia facilities are available for fabrication of machines, You
- : can do the AGA chips in Asia, or Eastern Europe. Look it can be done. It
- : may mean diverting some resources from the PPC Amigas to the AGA machines,
- : but if the prize is worth it, the risk may be worth it. I'm not asking for
- : anything your not capable of, just plug the numbers into the speadsheet
- : and see how it looks. There is a tide in the affairs of the computer hardware
- : industry which taken at the flood leads onto victory, but taken at the ebb
- : leads only to missery and defeat. The Voyager will discover only the ass of
- : the compatition unless it can take advantage of this unexpectedly early
- : flood tide. The initial units will have to come from france, but follow
- : on units could come from the US, Canada, or Mexico, and be cheap enough
- : to keep the presure on the compatition until you really are ready to
- : bring out the PPC Amiga', then again, are you realy that confedent that
- : you can bring out a realy good port of the PPC Amiga in the time you have
- : given yourselfs. A nice fat ballance sheet could help cushion any
- : dificulties that any slipage in delivery dates on the PPC Amiga might
- : cause. Moreover, the Dollar is expected to rise in relationship to
- : the DM this year, by as much as 20% (this is not a suggestion that you
- : take your money out of computers and put it into currency futures).
- : it is to say that a NA purchase of an Amiga could be unusualy rewarding
- : in 1996. Also, manufacuturing capacity remains relatively slack in NA,
- : so production costs should remain low. The DM will probably not decline
- : in relation to the Peso if you are prepared to take a lower quality of
- : workmanship (I would temporarily).
- : PT you want to move your main army methodicly and with resolve to
- : stay the plan, but you need special operations forces to take advantage
- : unforseen opertunities.
